The Department of Management Information Systems is one of six departments of the Fogelman College of Business & Economics, the only business college in the Memphis area that is fully accredited by the prestigious AACSB.

The MIS Department offers majors or concentrations for degrees including the Bachelor’s (BBA), Master of Science (MS), and the Doctorate (Ph.D.). The college’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program also includes MIS courses, some of which are required for the degree and others that serve as electives.

Our undergraduate student organization, Association for Information Technology Professionals (AITP), is available to undergraduate and graduate students and has guest speakers at regular intervals during the year. Several of our graduating seniors have won recognition for their scholastic achievements in recent years. Our MS program serves a range of students from part-time and full-time employees at local or regional firms to full-time students working as graduate assistants. Most of our Ph.D. students work as teaching or research assistants while pursuing a degree that will lead them toward a career as a university faculty member.

Our programs continue to be highly regarded due to
  • Emphasis on both the technology of the business world and the related management issues, i.e., the organizational and behavioral impact of technology.
  • Continuous improvement, in which courses at all levels are monitored for ways to change the content as needed to keep up with changing business needs and changing student needs.
  • Increased emphasis on helping students to be better able to become successful business professionals.
  • Improvements in the number of faculty with an ability to update their instructional content and methodologies as appropriate.

In addition to a strong emphasis on excellence in teaching, the MIS Department faculty are involved in extensive research projects and other scholarly activities, such as working on funded grants, writing textbooks, and working with business organizations in various capacities. The MIS faculty provide numerous service and support functions, both within the university and for outside organizations.
